Dobrow and Picker appointed to the school committee
At the end of a long six-interview process, the three selectmen and three remaining school committee members voted to appoint Tufts educator, recent PTA president and current METCO Steering Committee member Julie Dobrow and former planning board chairman Dennis Picker to the two vacant seats on the school committee.  Both will serve until next March, when they will have to run for election.

Indy files Open Meeting  Law complaint with DA's office

The Lincoln Independent has filed a complaint with the Middlesex District Attorney's office seeking to have the METCO Steering Committee, a subcommittee of the Lincoln School Committee, open its meetings to the public.

Originally meant to be a subcommittee of the school committee, the METCO Steering Committee referred to itself as such in its own draft documents. However, after complaints from the media to the school committee at the June 5 school committee meeting, the third draft eliminated all reference to having been formed by the school committee. The school superintendent now claims that it is his administrative group, and not subject to the Open Meeting Laws.

METCO Steering Committee ponders program costs
In preparing the letters above, steering committee member Cindy Sweetser argued for making the cost of the program a "central issue." Other members questioned this approach. The questionnaire that will be sent to residents has also undergone some editing.

Historical Society nixes anniversary plans
The Lincoln Historical Society voted unanimously to reject a 250th Anniversary Committee proposal to host a program, as part of the anniversary celebration, that would feature a debate between performers impersonating John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.  The LHS felt that raising money to finance this historically inaccurate program (neither of those founding fathers had anything to do with Lincoln's founding) would be inappropriate. The program was first proposed by selectman Sara Mattes.

Selectmen send letters to President Bush
As charged by Town Meeting, the selectmen sent the letters below to our nation's leader.  The letters oppose the war in Iraq, oppose the global privatization of water, and oppose provisions of the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts.  Note that the letter opposing the war is much shorter than the original letter sent by the selectmen, and that only two selectmen signed the letter opposing the Patriot Act.

School Committee interviews candidates for Assistant Superintendent

The battered remnants of a shrunken school committee (Ashton Peery, Sue Hollingsworth, the soon-departing Jurrien Timmer, and Hanscom representative Ron Deak) interviewed two candidates for the opportunity to replace Jeanne Whitten as Assistant Superintendent.  Finalists are Dr. Anne Koufman-Frederick, currently Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Carroll School, and Dr. Paul Naso, a principal at Weston's Country School.
